So, now that my blog is all set up…what do I want to write about? Part of my purpose with this blog is to document the family stories for our children and grandchildren, so it seems to make sense to have my first real blog post be about my parents. The family would all agree that these are two really special people!
Margaret and Bert are a love story. Margaret’s childhood was not typical (a topic for another story) so she was pretty grown up, although only in her teens, when she met Bert who was five years older. They were married a few days before Margaret’s 17th birthday on a lovely day in September, 1951. The wedding celebration was held on the back porch of Bert’s parents’ home in rural Mission. Margaret was radiant and Bert was handsome…they had a whole lifetime ahead and they were ready to take it on together.

After their wedding, Margaret and Bert set off on a honeymoon with their first stop at Harrison Hot Springs. The next day they headed up the Fraser Canyon to Boston Bar. After staying one night there, they were planning to continue along the Fraser Canyon but the starter on their car wasn’t working so they headed home. On the way home, every time they stopped, they had to be sure to park on a small hill and Margaret had to push the car so that Bert could pop the clutch to get the car started again. Margaret says even though the trip was cut short, they had lots of fun and lots of laughs! From Margaret’s stories through the years, I would say their honeymoon lasted a lifetime…although there were a few ‘broken starters’ through the years, the laughter and fun has always been the predominant theme.
I hope you have enjoyed this short introduction to my parents, Margaret and Bert. They figure prominently in my life and the lives of our children. I will continue with their story as I gather photos and check my facts with Margaret.
